The Sphinxkwartier is a former industrial estate in the center of Maastricht . The area, which includes the northern part of the neighborhoods Statenkwartier and Boschstraatkwartier , is the cradle of Maastricht’s industry. Near the Boschstraat and the inner harbor Bassin are about fifteen 19th and 20th century factory buildings, which in the past were part of the glass and pottery factories of Petrus Regout and its successor, Royal Sphinx . After the departure of the sanitary manufacturer from the city center in 2006, the area has been transformed into a residential and cultural district . Almost all factory buildings in the Sphinxkwartier are part of Maastricht’s industrial heritage . Some have the status of national monument . Since 2019, the Sphinxkwartier has been a so-called ‘anchor point’ of the European Route for Industrial Heritage .

A new part of the city is being created: the Sphinxkwartier . It is an unpolished and stubborn part of Maastricht. More than 100,000 m2 of industrial heritage is being repurposed on this site. At walking distance from the old historic city center, a new city district is being created for culture, innovation, retail, catering and living.

A hidden covered street of culture – access free and open all year round

The rich history of the Sphinxkwartier has been given a permanent place in the Sphinxpassage. In this 120-metre long corridor, almost 30,000 tiles bring the history of Maastricht ceramics to life. From the foundation by Petrus Regout up to and including the closure of the factory on Boschstraat. In 26 chapters you walk through the history and read more about the design and making process.

Multiplex cinema for international arthouse-films

Lumière is the place where you can catch up with the latest international arthouse-films. The cinema is screening up to 300 arthouse-films a year from around the world, with the program equally divided between smaller independent films and slightly more mainstream fare. With an emphasis on film authors, indie-favourites and film festival hits, the house is catering to a dedicated audience of cinephiles and casual filmgoers alike.
